Historically, Crestron system owners (homeowners, technology managers, end users, etc.) have accessed independent Crestron programmers (like us) indirectly through certified Crestron dealers and integration companies. In that role, we provide Crestron programming and design support as a sub-contractor to the dealer/ integrator who works with the end client.
For example, a homeowner hires a Crestron dealer to design the AV system, select products and install everything. Then the dealer brings in a Crestron programming company to make everything work together, allowing operation of all the components (a/v, lighting, HVAC, security system, shades, water features, etc.) as a single, controllable system.
That’s still the most common way we complete projects – as a sub-contractor to the dealer. However, we’ve developed a set of “best practices” to successfully work directly with end users that can be of great benefit in some situations.
Crestron system owners often communicate the disconnect they feel between what they want their system to do and what it actually does when the job is completed. In most cases it’s not a matter of miscommunication or lack of concern on the part of those involved with the installation of the system. Most often the problem is that having a dealer as the middle man can disrupt the flow of information; especially when it comes to small user interface or control feature requests.
Not all Crestron dealers have the knowledge that is required for a successful and functional system. They may not even know what can and can’t be done with a Crestron system, especially when it comes to controlling third party systems like alarms, HVAC and lighting. Many Crestron dealers are also limited when it comes to pricing specific options. When it comes to special requests, control system features and user interface options it can be challenging for dealers to navigate within a budget. For the most part, you really have to be an experienced Crestron programmer to estimate hours and pricing for various programming features. As a result, dealers will often include common programming options in their quotes by default. But as a Crestron system owner, you may want your system to do more. If that is the case, you will find great benefit in direct contact with a Crestron programming expert.
When we contract directly with Crestron system owners, we develop a detailed scope of work that documents each of the system features to be included. We can take the time to discuss various options, understand your desires and provide recommendations based on the experience we’ve gained after completing over 1,000 Crestron projects. Chances are, whatever you may ask for, we’ve probably done something very similar. But ultimately, each project is custom, and that’s the power of choosing Crestron and working with a Certified Crestron Service Provider (CSP).
In addition, we have a network of Crestron dealers and A/V integration specialists. So we can connect you with the best integration companies for your specific project, based on their strengths, specialties, location, product lines, skill sets, project size/ complexity, and availability. After all, we’ve been doing this since 2001 and we know the companies both in Southern California and across the U.S.
If you decide to work with a dealer and have us work under them that’s fine. And as I mentioned earlier, that is the most common way we complete projects. In that case, it’s important to ensure that you clearly communicate any specific desires you have for the user interfaces (remotes, touch panels, keypads, etc.) and control system functionality. Also, take the time to discuss any automation, or special features you want in your system. A little extra planning now, can make a world of difference in the level of usefulness, convenience and pleasure you get from your Crestron controlled system for years to come.
